OBACHAN: The Fierce & Fabulous Elderly Women of Japan.
After five years of living in Japan I was truly obsessed with the "obachan"; the elderly women who stalked the streets in clashing prints and elbowed me out of the way to get the discounted food in the supermarket. These bad bitches had lived through waaaaay too much to be bothered with good manners, they spoke their truth and got away with it on a daily basis. The clothing that they wore is a fashion movement all of it's own, bright, clashing prints, over-sized broaches and huge earrings. In a world that renders elderly women invisible their clothing was a figurative middle finger to Japanese youth culture.
These be the true boss-ass bitches of the world.
These works were shown at Three Eyes Gallery (128 Breaker Bay) and some of these puppies will be off to New York in October if you're international. Check out Tessa Moxey's work here.
